Rambling Rosie Visits RP Ning, Starts Nesting

Some of you are familiar with the Rocky Point Ramblings in either column form or the new radio version with co-host Russ Black on Sol FM 106.1 in Rocky Point (12pm-2pm on on Saturdays). This isn't an official "rambling", per se, but at the invitation of my friend and our host, I decided to stop by and leave you a little tidbit.

As I write this, the future of the radio program is in doubt, so if you haven't heard it yet, remember that on Saturdays you can also hear us live from wherever you are by going to www.rpcal.com The problems with the program have nothing to do with popularity. Fortunately, the show is well-rated and popular. The big question mark is due to the radio station management and whether they decide to continue with a concept that they themselves don't culturally understand. 'Nuff said (for now).

Ed Walters and his lovely wife Vi stopped by to see me the other day. Ed is the songwriter behind "I Wanna Be a Pirate". The video was shot in Penasco featuring local talent Kent Cossey and Todd Lyons playing Fat Cats (not much of a stretch, huh?). To see the video yourselves just go to www.makethemwalktheplank.com

Got a call from U of A in Tucson. The preparations for this year's Spring Break have begun and a few of us will be at the campus in early March for the annual Spring Break Safety Fair. While these are always working trips, I always feel like I'm on vacation. ProAlliance Insurance, The Rocky Point Tourism & Visitor Assistance Office (TVA) and the Puerto Penasco Office of Conventions and Visitors (OCV) will be sharing booth space and handing out informational packets to students. If you'd like us to include your promotional materials, please contact us at 638.388.6624 in Mexico or 602.773.1031 if you're calling from the States.

Speaking of Tucson, you all know about the tragic shooting that took 6 lives and left Congresswoman Giffords in very serious condition. The shooting got much coverage even in Mexico and everyone here is praying for the wounded and for the families in mourning.

In Penasco a group of us met last week to discuss this year's upcoming event calendar. Although right now things seem quiet (and cold...brr), I can assure you that there'll be a lot going on throughout 2011. The plan is to not let too much time go by without giving people in town something to see, attend or participate in. There are activities for sportsmen, fishermen, golfers, cyclists, drinkers, divers, sailors, art aficionados, foodies and of course bikers and spring breakers.

This month we have the Chili CookOff next week (Jan 15th) on the beach in the Mirador between the Pithaya and Playa de Oro RV Park. Chili Chefs will present their entries at 1pm, so get there a little earlier if you want to walk around and marvel at the many different approaches to chili (take it from me, these folks are serious about their 'secret' ingredients). This is one of those events where drinking beer feels de rigeur (I think this means you drink it rigorously).

On the 22nd, major league coaches from the U.S. will once more come to town to give little leaguers pointers and tips for improving their game. Scott Steinman, Gary Thurman and Henry Cotto and a few of their friends will be on hand the night before for a question-and-answer period with the local press. The time and place is yet to be announced, but I'll keep you guys posted and try to get a couple of pics as well.

Roger Clyne and the Peacemakers come to town on the 29th for the annual January Jam at JJ's Cantina in Cholla Bay. This year there will be a pre-Jam festival at the Sonoran Sun from 10am to 6pm with a parade of acts from the U.S.

Well, that's it for now, but Mr. RP Ning will probably get me to visit again. If you have any comments, questions about Rocky Point or topics you'd like me to discuss, just let us know. Hope to hear from you!
